Disasters can happen in a blink of an eye. If you live in Florida, that statement is never more relevant than during hurricane season. These storms can swamp properties and put life and limb at peril in one fell swoop.

The one advantage we have in case of hurricanes though is advanced warning. Technology affords folks some extra time to plan and prepare. Besides stocking up on water, non-perishable food, batteries, fuel, etc., there are other key factors to consider – namely your legal documents.

If and when faced with a possible situation that could threaten you and your home, there are essential documents you should have on hand and secured. Here are just a few basic items that come to mind:

  • ID: Driver’s license; military ID, etc.
  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates
  • Divorce decrees
  • Passports
  • Social Security cards
  • Bank/credit cards
  • Insurance policies (property and vehicle)
  • Home deed/mortgage
  • Car titles and registrations
  • Tax records and other related financial docs

While it’s prudent to have these documents and information backed up digitally, sometimes that’s not always feasible. Hurricane or not, it’s always good to have your important legal documents in order and easily accessible. You never know when you might need them.

Be prepared. Stay safe.
